Description

Mysore Classic is a high quality Authentic Mysore sandalwood oil
Distilled in 2025, from roots and heartwood of Mysore sandalwood, showcasing the artistry of traditional methods.

It offers a scent profile that is notably smoother and more refined compared to commercially distilled Mysore sandalwood oils.
Mysore Classic distinguishes itself by lacking the sharp overpowering citrus & green notes commonly found in mass-produced mysore sandal oils, presenting a more subtle and sophisticated fragrance that highlights the true essence of sandalwood, making it particularly suitable for macerations and similar projects. Ideal for connoisseurs and fellow artisans alike, this oil embodies the rich heritage of Mysore sandalwood while elevating the olfactory experience to new heights.

I took a few days before reviewing Classic Mysore 2025, because sandalwood oils—unlike most other natural oils—require more attention and preparation. But anyone reading this is probably already experienced with sandalwood oil, so I’ll just mention that I avoided any contact with sandalwood oils for 10 days before testing, and my nose was completely clear and ready. Without that, it would be almost impossible to give a realistic assessment.

The opening scent of Classic Mysore 2025 is, for me, pleasantly uneventful. Apart from a faint, light, nutty nuance, the oil has virtually no real top note—and that’s a good thing. I’m not a fan of strong top notes in sandalwood oils, whether they’re rosy-floral, buttery-creamy, citrusy, resinous, or—worst of all—smoky-animalic. Unfortunately, many so‑called “artisan oils” seem to put special emphasis on exactly that. But for me, the true quality of a good sandalwood oil doesn’t show in the opening—it’s in the drydown: only when, after a few hours on the skin, the (hopefully!) characteristic base notes take over and remain clearly present overnight into the next morning as a deep, warm santalol sub‑bass, can I call it a high‑quality sandalwood oil. Biosynthetically produced santalol can’t create this effect, nor can low‑grade oils. Even some expensive, small‑batch artisan oils fail here.

What I love most about Classic Mysore 2025 is the beautifully balanced composition of its base notes. Of course, it’s primarily sandalwood, but the famous balsamic base is subtly enriched with dry, warm, woody accents that hint at vanilla and cinnamon—without actually smelling like them. It’s more of a suggestion, an illusion. I don’t detect caramel, butter, or any dairy‑like notes, which I consider a definite plus. And unlike many other (often much pricier) oils, there are no “off‑notes” drifting toward smoke or animalic tones. To me, Classic Mysore 2025 comes close to an ideal vision of sandalwood oil. I’ve never smelled raw sandalwood wood itself, but the base notes here vividly evoke exactly that image in my mind.

I’m truly grateful I was able to get my hands on this exceptionally beautiful oil.
